BIG LOVE
By Charles Mee
Directed by Randy Baker
Presented by the Catholic University Department of Drama
November 19-22, 2015
Fifty brides seek refuge from their 50 grooms, doing whatever it takes to stop the wedding. Seeking asylum in a beautiful Italian villa, they experience threats of suicide, pacts of murderous revenge and maybe — accidentally — acts of love. Charles Mee’s explosive and poetic retelling of the world’s oldest play — Aeschylus’s The Suppliants — is equal parts comedy and tragedy, exploring themes of sex, revenge, and justice. And cake. Lots and lots of cake.

“There are so many things going on… [and] that’s part of the appeal. Big Love features tomato-smashing, on onstage bathtub, and clothes tossing all across stage. The highlight of the night is a red-wedding (literally) scene in which grooms are killed, blood is shed and even some cake smashing involved- it is a wedding after all. Visually stimulating, if ideologically confusing, the play is a must-see.”
